Baby Room Themes: Fun Ideas Your Baby Will Love

June 15th, 2008

Decorating a nursery for your new baby can be a fun and exciting experience. It will be the first place for your baby to dream, to experience, and to grow. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Location. Calm surroundings are critical to a newborn’s development. Avoid room’s that are close to a busy street, where there could be more noise. Will the baby’s room be on the same floor as your bedroom ? This makes it more convenient to monitor your baby. However, you can always opt for an audio or video monitor.

Time to decorate! Choosing a particular theme and design for your baby room depends on how much you want to spend, how much space you have, and whether it’s a boy or a girl. To be safe, you can always go for gender-neutral colors such as greens, purples, and reds.

Choosing a theme. Now it’s time to let your imagination run wild. To get some ideas, visit a few baby stores and check out different styles. They may even have example rooms set up that you can check out. Take a look at the following nursery themes to get a few ideas rolling.

Animals. This motif could include kittens, puppies, farm scenes, or teddy bears. This is a common theme that can easily be found in stores. You could purchase everything from the sheet and comforter set to coordinating wall hangings and wall paper.

Cartoon / TV Characters. The options are numerous here. Winnie the Pooh, Spiderman, Aladdin, Curious George, Bugs Bunny, Snoopy, and Peter Pan are just a few examples.

Noah’s Ark. This a popular theme with plenty of designs to choose from. You can accesorize with animal pictures, a nursery lamp, bedding, and even a rocking chair.

Dolphins or other underwater scenes. This theme will add a cool, refreshing feeling to your new baby room. The cool colors will also be comforting for you baby. For decorating, you could use sea-related wall hangings, sea shells, a border with waves, or even sea horses.

Crayons. Remember how much fun crayons use to be. Introduce your child to a new and creative world with this theme. You could use accents in the shape of hand prints or stencil of your choice. Place these on the walls, window frames, closet door, or even the lamp shade. Looking for the perfect paint. Crayola has come out with paints with their colors made specifically for the baby’s room.

Whichever design you choose, use inexpensive stain-repellant area rugs that can be easily replaced when you want to update the design. You’ll want a room that your child can grow into. The most important thing to keep in mind with choosing a baby room theme is make sure that it is safe and comfortable. From there, the possibilities are endless. Best of luck!

7 Crucial Baby Crib Safety Tips For A Baby-Loving Cot Bed And Mattress

June 12th, 2008

If you are a mom-to-be planning your baby’s nursery furniture and decor, the thought foremost in your mind probably is that you need to make sure that you create a safe environment for your precious new charge. The cot bed is the place where the infant will be for a substantial part of each day. What are the most important baby crib safety tips you need to keep in mind when decorating a nursery?

Bodies such as the Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association has a certification program and seal that reassure parents that a particular product has been thoroughly tested. Products only qualify to receive the seal it they meet or exceed the standards as set by the industry watch dog, ASTM International. Always check for this certification seal before making a buying decision.

1. Spacing Of Slats

All the cot beds that are certified will have slats that are no more than 2 3/8 inches apart. This is an extremely important baby crib safety aspect. If you want to bring in an antique heirloom, make sure that it has the required spacing between the slats, otherwise do not use it. It just isn’t worth the risk. You need to check the slats from time to time to make sure that they are secure. Never use a baby bed if some of the slats are missing. Many older baby furniture versions have cutouts in the headboard or footboard. This is an absolute no-no. The side bar needs to be 26 inches above the mattress when it is in its lowest position.

2. Crib Mattress Measurements

Don’t use an inferior mattress that fits loosely into the base of the bed. The fit should be snug and fairly tight. Baby crib safety regulations specify that you shouldn’t be able to fit more than two adult fingers (about 1 inch) between the mattress and the edge of the cot. The sheet should also be a tight fit and you need to be sure that it will remain in place. Rather struggle a bit with the crib bedding. This is far better than exposing your baby to the risk of getting trapped. Move the mattress to the lowest position as your baby becomes more mobile. Never use any form of plastic to cover a mattress. This is extremely dangerous.

3. Beware Of Window Blinds

Position this piece of nursery furniture as far as possible away from windows with window blinds, drapes or shutters with long cords. An accident happens in an instant. Remember to keep your eyes open for possible hazards around the bed. Don’t just focus on infant crib safety itself.

4. Cut Down Corner Posts

A cot with corner posts of more than 1/16 of an inch above the panels will never pass the JPMA inspection. It represents a strangling risk, as a baby’s clothes can get caught there. Remove these dangerous lengths and make sure that you sand the area down smoothly. Of course, if there are canopy posts that are more than 16 inches in length above the panels, this should be fine as far as baby crib safety is concerned.

5. Finishes And Finery

Check all the hardware regularly to make sure that everything is tight and secure. Loose screws or brackets present a danger. The finish on the wood should be non-toxic. Handle this with care to prevent peeling and chipping. Don’t use abrasive or toxic cleaners. Check that the wood remains smooth. Splintering or damage to the edges can injure your baby.

6. Nap-Time No-No’s

Remove all stuffed toys, pillows, quilts or comforters or other stuffed items during nap-times. All of these can turn into a suffocation hazard when you turn your back. Cover your baby with a light receiving blanket if necessary. Pull it up only to the chest and keep it away from the child’s face. Tuck it in securely around the mattress. Make sure that the baby isn’t too hot. For baby crib safety’s sake you may even want to consider looking at alternatives such as a sleep sack. By using this, you can avoid using blankets.

7. Bye-Bye Crib Bumpers

Bumpers and mobiles are fine until the baby is old enough to pull himself into a standing position. At that time it is safer to remove these. Also try to get bumpers that aren’t so stuffed that they look like pillows. These may be dangerous. Keep bumpers securely fastened at all times.

If the baby furniture comes with a drop side, always double check that it is up and secure before you leave your infant. When you put your baby down for a nap elsewhere, make sure that it is never on a soft surface such as a sofa or beanbag. If you travel and use a cot in a hotel, do a thorough check to make sure that it is safe. Ask your pediatrician about the safest sleep position for your baby.

Rather spend a few dollars more and get the best you can afford. You can never pay too much attention to baby crib safety.

Baby Hooded Towel Makes An Ideal Present For Your Friends Baby

June 9th, 2008

Bath time with your little one is usually a fun-filled experience for both of you. Having the right accessories can make the experience even more fun. One of the must-haves in infant bath gear is the baby hooded towel. There are plenty of adorable designs available and you are sure to create moments that are picture perfect.

One of my personal favorite baby hooded towel is the classic duck design. This makes a great gift whether you have a boy or a girl and it is such an adorable addition to your rubber ducky and ducky robe. The yellow color is unisex and the baby hooded towel can be handed down from one sibling to the next.

The ducky design is a true favorite for many parents but some parents want to opt for designs that are a little unique. Just about everyone has seen a cute infant in an adorable ducky baby hooded towel at one point or another. Some parents may want to try something a bit different for their little one.

There are plenty of options available in the baby hooded towel designs and you are sure to find one that suits your tastes as well as your little one’s unique personality. While the ducky design will always have appeal, others designs are coming to the forefront as well. The baby hooded towel is versatile and it comes in an array of colors and themes.

I recently purchased a baby hooded towel for my niece. Her mother chose a flower design for her little girl and I have to admit that my ducky design pales in comparison. The pink flower seats around the baby’s head making the infant’s face the center of the flower. Its petals surround the chubby cheeks and the whole thing comes together in a way that is nothing less than adorable.

The flower design is really different and colorful. It is also very girly which has its appeal as well. My sister-in-law has sent me several pictures of her daughter’s after bath time apparel. This baby hooded towel is a new classic in our family. We have a lot of pictures to prove it.

Some parents may want something a little more understated. When it comes to bath time the infants are so cute that they really don’t need much help. The perfect baby hooded towel is really made of good quality material rather than adorable designs. The cute patterns do have a great impact, though.

Baby Photo Contest – 5 Good Reasons To Enter Your Baby Or Toddler

June 9th, 2008

You think your child is the cutest thing on the planet, but so does every other parent. While that may be your sole purpose in entering a child into a photo contest, here are 5 other reasons you should considering entering your baby or toddler into a baby photo contest.

#1 – Most baby photo contests offer prizes. Most of the time, the Grand Prize is Cash. That is the easiest money you could ever make. This would be a great way to save money for college.

#2 – If you are looking to get your child into modeling, pageants, TV or magazines, baby photo contests is a great way to start. Some baby photo contests even send your baby photo entries to modeling agencies if they like what they see. This is great exposure for your child.

#3 – It’s a fun and exciting thing to do for you baby. Imagine your child’s surprise when they know how much you thought of them that you entered them into a baby photo contest.

#4 – You have tons of baby photos. Do something different with them. Scrapbooks and photo albums are wonderful, but entering your baby into a baby photo contest is exciting!

#5 – Satisfaction of winning! You know your baby is a cutie pie. Winning would be proof! Some baby photo contests even offer prizes to all children whether they place in the top 3 or not.

Some baby photo contests are free to enter and others you may need to pay for. I have found that those with fees offer the better prizes and have less competition for your baby and toddler. Be savvy in choosing the baby photo contest you enter. The less popular the site and contest, the less competition you will have. There are also some baby photo contests that offer online voting. With those contests, you have more control of your child’s chances at winning.

Remember that baby photo contest are a form of entertainment that can benefit your child, however you musn’t take them too seriously. Otherwise you miss out on the fun of the whole experience. Good Luck in finding a great baby photo contest.

Bringing In Baby: That Little Giraffe Baby Blanket May Send A Deeper Message

June 9th, 2008

Look through any catalogue for baby gear and you’ll find that we want only the softest and gentlest of things to come into contact with our new babies. As humans we want to sweetly ease them into the home and make them welcome into the world. We choose soft, inviting fabrics and color pallettes (like those used in those wonderful Little Giraffe receiving blankets, for example): easy on new bodies and suggesting a smooth landing from mother’s womb to the earth. We want the first messages baby gets to be ‘you are safe, comforted, and welcomed here’.

Even before the baby is born, it seems that people all around the world do some version of the welcoming song as if they are calling the baby forth. In Native American lore, the Whale’s song is a tonal record for all that is past, present and future. Perhaps the act of preparing for baby by purchasing the crib, attending showers and receiving gifts taps into the part of the song that celebrates the coming of new life with its mystery and magnificence. Universally, this song’s call may be an expression of the hopes and wishes for all generations. Who knew that choosing your baby bedding could herald such universal themes? Perhaps the designers knew if only unconsciously. There does seem to be a growing awareness of the ethical and energetic impact of objects on consumer psyches which is spawning a new age in product development and availability.

The gifting process is a great example of celebrating the preciousness of a life coming forth. It may even be that the person who absentmindedly picks up a cursory gift from the mall for a shower contributes in a symbolically potent way. Perhaps this gifting action alone sets into motion a thought and wish that is transferred right to the very being soon to arrive. Even without waxing on such lofty concepts, the thought that an act of welcoming kindness sends a positive message is easy to imagine.

The next time you are a fortunate part of the human welcoming chorus, take the opportunity to consider, just for a moment, what message you want to convey as you take part in the celebration. Consider the art of mindfulness and intention as you select the gift or attend baby related events. Consider yourself lucky to be a witness to such life affirmation and remember that it is possible that the message you send with your presence and offering may have such an effect as to cosmically rebound into your own life.

Traditional, Classic, And Old World Baby Clothing Dressing Your Baby The Old-School Way

June 9th, 2008

In today’s world there are nearly as many styles in baby clothing as there are babies crawling about. Parents who want modern clothing can find it at the nearest Wal-Mart, those who desire alternative forms of clothing for their babies can usually find it online, some people make their baby clothing by hand, cutting cloth and sewing together designs from patterns purchased at the nearest Hancock Fabrics location. The choices are nearly limitless and include styles and designs too numerous to mention completely.

Like in other areas of the fashion world, baby clothes designs never really die, they go in and out of style according to the whims of the populace which, in the case of baby clothes, means the whims of the parents. Right now one of those whims is leaning toward retro clothing styles.

The term retro can mean a number of things, but often refers to pop culture of the recent past. While its true that styles influenced by the pop culture of the 1970s and 1980s are becoming popular, there is another retro movement taking place and it leans toward classic or old world baby clothing. Designs that were popular fifty, sixty, seventy, and up to a hundred years ago are gaining popularity with parents all over the country.

For baby boys, billowing “rompers” are selling from a number of specialty shops and websites from around the world to a largely American clientele, as are two piece short & shirt sets and old-style coveralls. Classic designs for girls include mostly flowing dresses and female counterparts to the boys’ rompers.

Most of these designs can not be found in the average American store and many come from Europe and must be purchased online or by mail order. The British web site “Baby Classics” offers these styles and more to their customers, so many of whom are in the US that the company saw fit to quote their prices in dollars as well as British pounds. The outfits are expensive by most baby clothing standards, costing about the same as some of the more extravagant designer outfits for babies, but have found an audience because of the “cute” appearance of the clothing as it is worn by the infants or toddlers.

These extremely retro baby fashions may not be for everyone because off their unique looks and hefty prices, but many parents are jumping onto this classic bandwagon and dressing their babies in the fashions of long ago. Due to the cost and the delicate fabrics you probably won’t see a lot of these designs showing up at the local park for play dates, but don’t be surprised if you’re sitting in church or at some special occasion and see a baby dressed like she’s living in the 1920s.

Newborn Baby’s First Nights At Home: Tips To Help Your Baby Learn To Sleep Throughout The Night

June 9th, 2008

You have a new baby, oh what wonder and joy this little guy or gal is, however, you have not had a good night’s sleep since being home with this wonderful little creature. Don’t give up. You can help your new baby sleep all night, every night. And remember, you are certainly not alone. Sleepless nights are something common for most new parents.

Newborn babies often sleep 16 or more hours per day. Their sleep time, however, is often done in stretches of just one to two hours at a time. As your baby’s nervous system matures a more consistent sleep schedule emerges and he or she can go longer between feedings.

By the time your new baby reaches three months of age he or she will probably be sleeping for as long as five hours during the night. At six months of age, nighttime stretches of nine to 12 hours are most likely.

Look over the following tips to help your baby become a good sleeper:

• Encourage activity during the day: During the waking hours with your baby keep him or her busy by talking, singing and playing. Provide your baby with lots of light. This type of stimulation during the day can help promote better sleep at night.

• Monitor your baby’s naps: Allow your baby regular naps during the day and not large chunks of time that may cause your baby to stay wide awake at night.

• Follow a consistent bedtime routine: If you bath, cuddle, sing or read to your baby just before bedtime he or she will soon associate these activities with sleep.

• Put your baby to bed drowsy but awake: This technique helps your baby associate bed with the process of falling asleep. Place your baby to sleep on his or her back. Clear the crib or bassinet of blankets and other soft items.

• Give your baby time to settle down: If your baby fusses when you first put him to bed, allow him or her to find a comfortable position for falling asleep. If the crying does not stop within a reasonable amount of time, try speaking calmly to your baby and stroke his or her back to provide reassurance of your presence.

• Consider using a pacifier: If your baby has trouble settling down, try using a pacifier at naptime and bedtime to help reduce his anxiety. One problem of using a pacifier might be if he or she loses during the middle of the night and cries for its replacement. Guess who has to get up in the middle of the night to find the pacifier for baby?

• Expect frequent stirring at night: Don’t be alarmed if you hear your baby squirming and wriggle as they sleep. This is quite normal. Some babies can be noisy. All these things may simply be a sign of settling down. Unless you suspect your baby is hungry or uncomfortable (needing a diaper change or whatever), it is OK to wait a few minutes to see if he or she finally settles down. If not, then better check on baby.

• Keep nighttime care low-key: When you feed your baby or care for he or she during the night, use dim lights, a soft voice and very calm movements. This will teach your baby that it is time to sleep and nothing else.

Some babies sleep throughout the night the first night home. I know my baby slept through the night straight from the beginning of our nights at home. She was such a good baby I would always say.

However, not all babies are alike; respect your baby’s preferences. Take time to understand your baby’s schedule and ways of communicating. They will eventually settle down and sleep the whole night through. If your baby is still fussy at nighttime by age 6 months, ask your baby’s doctor for instruction and suggestions.

The goal here is for everyone to get a good night’s sleep. It is not a measure of your parental skill or a sign of a good or bad baby. I just always thought my baby was the absolute best at everything, and sleeping throughout the night was just one more reason I thought she was “perfect.” She has paid me back though as an adult, and what I got to say about her now is not the same…..At times I ask myself is this the same person I use to know as a baby, toddler and child?

The Modern Day Baby Alarm Has Progressed A Lot Since The Baby Monitor Of My Time

June 9th, 2008

Once you become a parent, a few extra senses kick in. Your intuition regarding your child is very strong. Naturally you should follow it. Avoid rationalizing things in your head just to make you feel better or give you peace of mind. When you literally have a bad feeling about your child, look into it. Intuition is only there for one reason. It’s a natural sense we have that keeps us and those we love safe. And it will do a darn good job if you let it. As most parents do in this day and age, invest in devices that assist you.

Locks for your cabinets, regulation car seats, and a baby alarm or two can help a great deal. It’s nice to be able to watch your infant or toddler even when you’re in another room. This way you know for certain that he/she is okay and everything’s kosher. Take my word on this one.

High tech devices are constantly being designed to assist parents and help keep children safe. One of the old gadgets that was widely used is the baby monitor. Yeah, yeah, I know it’s really not that old, but now days we have more advanced models of the traditional baby alarm or monitoring system. A parent can literally watch their little one playing in the other room via a hand-held camera. See what they’re up to and what they’re saying at any time you please. This naturally makes it easy for a parent to get things done around the house, but keep peace of mind while doing so.

Another variation of the baby alarm comes in the form of a small device that attaches to your child’s clothing. You can keep the receiver on your keychain of in your pocket. If you want to know the exact location of your child, simply press the baby alarm receiver and it will sound on the child. Pretty nifty, huh? This gadget is particularly ideal for parents with toddlers. Attach a baby alarm to their outfit before allowing them to walk next to you in a public place. This way you can keep track of your child at all times and help prevent abduction.

And if you really want to go all-out, there are also tracking watches that can be purchased. This lets you see the location of your child, regardless of where he/she is. Obviously this device would be ideal if a child were abducted. Authorities could locate the kid pretty quickly.

Take advantage of the baby alarm, monitors, tracking devices and leashes if you can afford to. These were all designed to make your job as a parent much easier. Do your best to keep your little one safe.

Baby Shower Food: Intimacy At Baby Showers Makes Future Babies

June 9th, 2008

Let us stick with tradition that is here to stay and that is celebrating the birth of a new born infant and the baby shower party to recognize his/her forthcoming presence.

On receiving the good news about the pregnancy friends and family gather to offer their congratulations and fuss over the parents-to-be. But the fussing does not end there, more fuss to come when organizing a baby shower celebration.

If the baby shower is properly planned then you will wonder what all the fuss about.

A good time to throw a baby shower is at least a couple of months before the due date of the new arrival. Remember there are some cultures that do not practise celebrating in a baby shower because of their beliefs where they believe it is bad luck before the infants birth.

Why all the excitement over the new born where baby showers are in order to celebrate babys being.

Think about it, you dont get a second chance because you never have the same baby twice. So do it in style and join in the fun for every new edition to the family.

Making plans for baby shower food is very important. You will want the decoration theme and invitations perfect. But perfection on the day stays with the spread you lay on the table.
You have your little prince/princess on the way now it is time to lay a feast fit for king/queen.

Popular table fillers are
Sandwiches
Chips/fries
Pies (pizzas.)
Pasta
Dessert (cakes, cookies, ice cream, jelly.)
Drinks (punch, juice, wine.) These are just a few ideas and choices are endless but it is up to you what you have on the day

Consider a sit down meal for all the invited guests at the baby shower, remember this is about timing. Make sure to properly map out your list of duties and get the scheduling of the meal right, if not expect your plans to go all topsy turvy.

An easier option is snacks, just as appetizing and filling and less dishes to wash if served on disposable plates. Finger sandwiches filled with different pates, sliced chicken or turkey with fresh salad. Dips of different flavours go down well.

If your theme for the baby party is of a Disney character then work around this with a baby shower cake made up of the cartoon figure which you will find makes a fabulous centrepiece also.
Remember a pretty table makes pretty eating. Decorate the table with baby items cuddly toys, confetti, candy.

It is good to know a more intimate side to your guest then this will give you an idea what food to serve e.g. if vegetarian no steak if on a diet no cakes.

Draw the line on how intimate you get because this baby shower is about THIS BABY not any future ones.

If this day is to be remembered for as long as ever after then be sure to browse this fabulous site for fantastic ideas/themes. All you could possibly want to announce babys presence can found here at http://www.good-baby-showers.com

Hosting A Baby Shower? Here Is How To Guide Your Attendees About Baby Showers And Baby Shower Gifts

June 9th, 2008

Hosting a surprise baby shower is a fun exercise in empathy. You need to put yourself in the shoes of the expectant mother - her feelings, her personality, her character, and her schedule. You also need to make it a fun experience for her; if there are tears, they should be tears of joy.

Pre-Baby Shower Preparations

Carefully plan the baby shower. Since this is usually given on the third trimester, you should have plenty of time for party planning. Prepare a checklist of the things you need to do, and procure including an initial list of baby shower gifts you need your attendees to bring.

Decide on the party theme, number and gender of invitees, and the date and venue. Decide if you want the party to be a surprise or not; you want a pleasant surprise for the honoree, not unpleasant shock. Prepare the guest list, which should include everyone close to the expectant mother.

If the expectant mother is registered for gifts, inform the guests should they inquire. Just like the wedding, send the invitations at least three weeks before the party. Prepare the menu to reflect the theme; you can prepare the food, order takeout, or engage a caterer. Make sure that the food is prepared and delivered as agreed.

If possible, prepare the venue a day before the party. Harried preparations have a way of ruining what could have been a great baby shower. If possible, rehearse the flow of activities to ensure smooth transition.

You also need to coordinate the attendees’ baby shower gifts. You need to ensure that there will be no unnecessary duplication of gifts. A diaper cake is a great gift - attractive and usable - but discovering that almost all the guests brought diaper cakes and nothing else is impractical.

During the Baby Shower

Make sure that the party activities are followed as closely as possible. However, remain flexible as baby showers are meant to be relaxed fun, not a military drill. Just ensure that the food is served satisfactorily, the guests and honorees are comfortable, and everybody is having fun.

Keep track of the baby shower gifts being opened. Sometimes, guests will bring extra gifts aside from the coordinated baby shower gifts. This is perfectly acceptable and the expectant mother will appreciate these extra blessings. Keeping track of these baby gifts will help you and the mother write appropriate thank-you notes.

After the Baby Shower

When the baby shower is finished, expect a lot of discarded gift wrappings, take-home gift baskets and diaper cakes and an assortment of baby equipment from bathtubs to cribs. These baby shower gifts must be organized and brought home, assuming that the venue is outside the expectant mother’s house.

Help in making the venue as tidy as possible. You want your honoree to feel relaxed from start to end of the baby shower, not act as the cleaning maid.

Assist the expectant mother in making thank-you notes to the guests for their participation and their gifts. Your tracking list should guide you in thanking the guests for the specific items they brought. Avoid social faux pas due to negligence.

When you host a baby shower, just remember that you are celebrating motherhood and a new life. Make the baby shower a celebration filled with good cheer and a joyful gathering of family and good friends.

If you are the host of a baby shower, ensure that your guests will bring coordinated baby gifts. Encourage them to bring personalized baby gifts to reflect the mother’s personality. These baby shower gifts can be found at BabyLandGifts.com in various themes that will please any expectant mother.
